CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR MTB CHALLENGE
Saturday, 2 March 2019 sees the Cape Town Cycle Tour Lifecycle Week kick off in a cloud of dust. In seventeen years, the Cape Town Cycle Tour MTB Challenge has become the most desirable one-day event on the South African calendar. And for good reason. With 20km, 40km and 60km routes from Meurant Botha, the legendary Stellenbosch course designer, and the 40-year organisational experience of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, it offers top mountain biking for newbies and world champions alike, as well as the opportunity to earn kudos (and a special medal) for backing up the 60km ride here with the Cycle Tour the following weekend.
The three route options, which offer easy, intermediate and technical trail conditions as they get longer.
OUR ITINERARY
FRIDAY THE 22ND OF FEBRUARY – OVERNIGHT FLIGHT FROM EUROPE TO CAPE TOWN
SATURDAY 23RD – ARRIVE CAPE TOWN AND SETTLE INTO ACCOMMODATION
We meet you at Cape Town international Airport late in the afternoon. When all are there we transfer to our accommodation which is about 40min to an hour away – depending on the traffic that time of the day on a Friday….
On arrival and after we have settled into our accommodation, we assemble our bikes. We will have all the relevant tools and support there to make sure this is a pleasant and quick process! Time permitting, we then go and test the bikes just to make sure all is in 100% working order for the week ahead.
Dinner tonight is included
SUNDAY 24TH – RHEBOKSKLOOF
Rhebokskloof is a relatively small wine farm on the slopes of Paarl Mountain. The slopes make up a valley that is perfectly shaped, almost like a huge amphitheater where some amazing single trails has been built! There are various route options and we can keep ourselves busy for quite a while.
Afterwards we do lunch in Paarl on the way back to our accommodation.
MONDAY 25TH – JONKERSHOEK – STELLENBOSCH
A MTB destination that provides you with many route options in a typical Western Cape Mountain region! There are some “nice” climbs, traverse sections and downhill single trails that range from easy to advanced black routes. They choice is yours and we will discuss and try as many as we feel up to on the day!
We’ll spend the morning there and then stop off in Stellenbosch village on the way back for a well-earned lunch!
TUESDAY 26TH – MEERENDAL AND HOOGEKRAAL
Made famous as the destination for the route of the prologue for the Absa Cape Epic. Meerendal is set in the Durbanville hills with Table Mountain as the backdrop. Breathtaking views, single-track climbs and downhill sections that is so flowing and smooth that you will want to go back up and do them again!!
Great riding followed by lunch at Meerendal.
WEDNESDAY 27TH – OAK VALLEY MTB TRAILS
To get to the Oak Valley trails we need to drive over Sir Lowry’s Pass to the other side of the Helderberg mountains. These trails, in various configurations, have been part of a couple of Absa Cape Epic events but is also the base for the annual FNB Wines2Whales event. This means that the trails are in perfect condition and there are various exciting man-made features on the trail to maximize enjoyment for us riders.
You might consider coming back for the Wines2Whales after riding here!
THURSDAY 28TH – HERMANUS
It’s a bit of a drive to get to Hermanus but this day outing is most definitely worth the effort. The trails that we will be riding takes us into the Hemel and Aarde valley where some of the sections are also part of the last day of the Wines2Whales and has also featured in the Absa Cape Epic. Many route options and spectacular scenery will keep you entertained and happy while on your bike!
Hermanus is known as the whale watching capital of South Africa. Even though we are not going to be there during peak whale watching season, the Brydes and Humpback whales are still in the bay and there is always a chance to spot them. Our lunch spot for the day gives us the best opportunity to spot any whales that might be out there in the bay, as we will be sitting right next to the water – picture to the right.
Lunch today is included
FRIDAY 1ST MARCH – TOKAI, KIRSTENBOSCH TRAILS AND TABLE MOUNTAIN
Tokai has been closed for a couple of years due to fires that ravaged the mountains. This however gave the opportunity to build quite a number of new trails and as the main MTB destination in the Southern suburbs of Cape Town, the trails are excellent. We ride all the way back to Cape Town from Tokai, following the greenbelts, the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens trails and the slopes of Table Mountain.
The slopes of Table Mountain have also previously been the location for the Absa Cape Epic prologue in the past and offers spectacular views of Cape Town and the bay! We have lunch in town and fetch our race packs for Sundays Cape Town Cycle Tour.
SATURDAY 2ND – CTCT MTB CHALLENGE EVENT
The CTCT (Cape Town Cycle Tour) MTB Challenge is a typical South African event with route options for all, including 20, 40 or 60km. The route starts on Muratie Wine Farm and traverse some of the famous wine farms in the Stellenbosch wine region. This event is well known for its wide range and amazing single-track sections that have been purpose built! To get a better idea of what the event is all about, please go and have a look at the event website.
We all meet at the finish line and then after enjoying a recovery drink, we get on our bikes and take a short spin to our lunch spot on the neighboring farm.
